In 1943, Sgt. James "Bucky" Barnes was captured by the Nazis and was dosed with the same super soldier serum his best friend Steve Rodgers had been given. His best friend, now known as Captain America, rescued him. During a mission against Hydra, Steve fell from a train and was lost in combat.

Howard Stark and Peggy Carter convinced him to take up the shield and serve as the new Captain America. He did so, reluctantly, until he too was lost when the HYDRA plane he was on crashed into the ocean.

That is, until the day he was found by SHIELD.
